Folks walking in the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor the evening of September 1 were surprised to see a strange boat resembling a gray from a science fiction film docked near the Crow's Nest Restaurant. The ship, Earthrace," which only used renewable fuels, is trying the break the world record (75 days) for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat. Skipper Pete Bethune has sunk his life saving intgo "Earthrace" because he is committed to publicizing the need for biodiesel. He says the hardest part about his effort is missing his wife and two daughters who are back home in New Zealand. Sarah Graham and Peggy Stap from Marine Life Studies of Monterery presented Bethune with net to recognize his environmental efforts. Story by Ruth Carlson
